On the day “Team Teens With Attitude” was assigned the Pico-Union area, I came across this mural. I don’t know who Oscar Romero is, but I do know that his message resonates with many of the residents in this area. In a predominately Latino neighborhood, the Catholic and Christian people hold their beliefs ‘til the day they pass. While I am open-minded, I can’t help but think about those who are not as open-minded. Grandmothers, mothers, fathers, aunts, and uncles who are intolerant or ignorant of what non-believers believe. I can’t help but to think about the residents who are part of the LGBTQ community, Do they live in fear, not because of an all-powerful being in the sky, but because of what the believers of that being would say or do to them. This thought has allowed me to speak-up for others, not to argue but to educate and inform.
